Parental benefit at sickness benefit level for EU citizen

Dear Försäkringskassan's team!

I was offered a job in Sweden starting in January/February 2019. I would like to take this opportunity and move to Sweden, bringing my family with me. This means my live-in girlfriend and our three joint children.
The third child is not yet born but will be in September 2018.
The question is, whether my girlfriend will be eligible for parental benefit at sickness benefit level (based on her German income before giving birth) in Sweden?
We are EU citizens (German) and my girlfriend was working in Germany full-time until she entered maternity protection in early August 2018. This maternity protection is a German regulation by law saying that women shall not work six weeks before giving birth and eight weeks after. After this period of maternity protection, she will stay on parental leave here in Germany (receiving parental benefit here) until we move to Sweden.

Thank you very much for any answers, very appreciated!

  • Hello!

The condition for receiving parental leave benefits based on your income for the first 180 days of the parental leave, is to have an annual income of at least SEK 82,100 for at least 240 consecutive days before the estimated delivery date. If one worked in another country in EU/EEA or Switzerland before the child was born, there is a possibility that he or she can get parental benefit based on previous income from that country. However, we will look more into this once we receive the application.

Generally, in Sweden, parental benefit is paid out for 480 days for one child. For 390 days, the compensation is based on the income one has (days at the sickness benefit level). For the other 90 days, the compensation is SEK 180 per day (days at the minimum level). However, if one or both of you have taken out some parental benefit days from Germany, these days will be deducted first. We will look into this once we receive your applications.
