Newly arrived British citizen rights to claim social benefits

Hi there,
I am moving to Sweden with my children from UK. Am I entitled to receive or transfer the child/ low income benefits and other benefits as I did in the UK right away?

Or do I have to wait for certain period before i could claim these benefits?

I would be obliged for your reply.
Kind regards

  • Hello,
If you are planning on staying in Sweden at least one year, you must most often be entered into the Swedish population register. You do this by registering with the Swedish Tax Agency.
    Swedish Tax Agency (skatteverket.se)

If you move to Sweden but do not become registered in the Population Register, you provide information to Försäkringskassan that we use to investigate whether you should be insured in Sweden. If you are insured here, you may be entitled to compensation from Försäkringskassan if, for example, you have a baby. You submit information using My pages (Mina sidor) on www.fk.se
Lämna uppgifter för utredning av försäkringstillhörighet (login)
If you are unable to use My pages (Mina sidor), you can send submit the information using this form:
5456 Information for investigation of insurance affiliation

If you move to Sweden together with children under the age of 16, Försäkringskassan contacts you once you are registered in the Swedish Population Register. We do this to investigate whether you and your children should be insured here and thereby eligible for child allowance and other benefits.
Generally, in Sweden, parental benefit is paid out for 480 days for one child. For 390 days, the compensation is based on the income one has (days at the sickness benefit level). For the other 90 days, the compensation is SEK 180 per day (days at the minimum level). However, if one or both of parents have taken out some parental benefit days from the UK, these days will be deducted first. We will look into this once we receive your applications.
