Going abroad during sick leave

Hi,

I've seen a trend on people going on sick leave, specially on a mental illness related, using those dates to go on vacation, some of them even post pictures on their Instagram.
Is this legal? I understand that some of them could be recommended by their therapist to go on a get away as part of the treatment but if so, how Försäkringskassan control this to confirm that this is actually a doctor's order and not the individual taking advantage of the benefits?

It's alarming the amount of colleagues doing this even for years, while other people with other medical conditions need to be investigated in order to receive financial aid.

Same goes for paternity leave, parents use those days to go abroad on vacation. Isn't that called holidays and not parental leaving? Aren't parents with kids taking more vacation days in that case?

  • Hello!

A person receiving sickness benefit can travel as long as the trip does not affect one's rehabilitation or recovery negatively.

Travel within the EU/EEA or to Switzerland, you do not need to apply to continue receiving your sickness benefit during your travel.

However, if you are travelling to a country outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland, you must apply to continue receiving your sickness benefit during your stay abroad before you leave.
