  • Hi Elham,

If you agree that you will receive the child allowance alone, you must both sign and send in the form: 5180 Child allowance and large family supplement (if applicable) – Parents’ joint registration of recipient. You can find the application by clicking here.

You can find more information about the Child allowance by clicking here.

You can register a bankaccount by logging in to My Pages (Mina Sidor).

Yes you can apply for parental benefit. If you have no income or have earned less than SEK 117,590 in a year, you receive SEK 250 per day at sickness benefit level. This is the equivalent of about SEK 7,500 a month. You can find more information about the Parental Benefit by clicking here.

  • Hello,
I would like to know if I can receive parental benefits and child allowance.
I am from Germany, thus an EU citizen with the right to live in Sweden. I live with my partner but we are not married.
As I worked in Sweden only for 3 months, I don't have the personal number and now I am unemployed.
I  recently found out that I am pregnant  and would like to know if I can receive parental benefits and how much and child allowance? (How much would that be?)
Will I receive parental benefits and child allowance  even if my child will be born in Germany? (I live now in Sweden but want to give birth in my home country and then return to Sweden immediately)

    Thank you
    Best regards
    Nati

  • Hello,

Even though you are EU citizen and have the right to live in Sweden, in order to be able to receive parental benefits and child allowance, you need to be registered at Skatteverket. This means that you need to apply for personnummer or samordningsnummer. We will not be able to register you at Försäkringskassan if you did not receive any number from them.

It is not a problem to give birth in Germany and then to come back to Sweden in order to register the child at Skatteverket and finally to obtain child allowance and parental benefits from Sweden. You still have the right to receive child allowance (1050 kr/ month) and parental benefits on the basic level (250 kr per day on higher (S) level and 180 kr per day on lower (L) level) even if you have never worked in Sweden or worked very little, however the personnummer/ samorningsnummer from Skatteverket needs to be obtained.

In order for you to be able to get parental benefits and child allowance, we need to register you first at Försäkringskassan. When you have number from Skatteverket, send us application 5456, which you can print out from our website. After receiving your application we will make a decision about your registration at Försäkringskassan.

If you wish to receive more infromation regarding your case, you are welcome to call us on 0771 524 524 or you can also book a German talk via the following website here.

  • Hej,

My family live in Sweden. My husband works in Sweden. He is registreted in forsakringskassan. I get parental benifits from my native country (EU country) that's way I am not registreted in forsakringskassan. We have 3 childrens. Can my husband applay for child allowance?
    I.S
  • Hello,

If your family lives here and additionally your husband works in Sweden, your family is entitled to child allowance from Sweden.

Since you are registered in another EU country which pays you the parental benefits, we will have to check if you have the right to child allowance from more than one country for the same child and period. If you have the right to child allowance from both countries, the benefits will be coordinated so that you do not receive the same benefit twice. The Eu social security coordination is based on rules which determine which country shall have primary responsibility for paying EU family benefits.

Since only one parent is registered at Försäkringskassan, we will not start your child allowance case automatically. Please ask your husband to contact our call center on 0771 524 524 (service available in Swedish and English) in order to apply for child allowance. You can also book a call with Försäkringskassan in other languages. More information about that, you will find here.

  • Hello,

After you have received the number from Skatteverket, you need to register at Försäkringskassan in order to be able to apply for child allowance or parental benefits.

To register send us application 5456, which you can print out from our website. After receiving your application we will make a decision about your registration at Försäkringskassan. Sometimes in order to register you, we need a form E104 which shows the periodes of time you have been socially insured in another country. If we need this form from you and you are not able to get it yourself, you can ask Försäkringskassan to contact the authorities in your country directly.

    Regarding child allowance:
If the other parent lives in Sweden, he should also send us the form 5456 to register at Försäkringskassan together with the copy of the employment contract. If you are both registered at Försäkringskassan, we will start the payment of child allowance automatically.
If the other parent of your son is registered in another EU country, we will have to check if you have the right to child allowance from more than one country for the same child and period. If you have the right to child allowance from both countries, the benefits will be coordinated so that you do not receive the same benefit twice. In this case, we will not start your child allowance case automatically and you need to call us to start it.
If we need information about your child allowance from another country, you can also ask Försäkringskassan to contact the authorities in your country directly.

    Regarding parental benefits:
You have the right to receive parental benefits on the basic level (250 kr per day on higher (S) level and 180 kr per day on lower (L) level) even if you have never worked in Sweden or worked very little. You are eligible for full parental benefit at the basic or lower level if you are working up to seven hours or when your child or you are up to seven hours at school.
When you will get parental benefits based on the 80% of your salary, the rules change. In case your parental benefit will be based on your previous job salary, please contact us on 0771 524 524 (press 8 for English) to find out how to take out your parental benefit correctly or read more here.

As your son is 4 years old, you or the other parent might have received parental benefits from another country. If yes, please do send us the document with the information of how many days of parental benefits you have received and how much money did you both get.

In order to apply for parental benefits, you can log in to Mina Sidor on our website or call us on 0771 524 524 to order the application form.

    Best regards,

  • Hi SIr,
    I have three queries.
I have a family of 4 (me my wife and 2 childs). I am a nonEU resident and working on workpermit VISA.
We have recently got the personnel number. My wife is a housewife.
    1) If I want to apply for parental and child benefit, can I download the form from this site in English?
    2) What additional documents needed with the application?
    3) Do we need a bank account detail with the application?

    Regards

  • Hello,

    (2) In order to receive parental benefit or child allowance, first you should be registered at Försäkringskassan. You can fill in the registration application which is available in English here. Each parent of the child needs to fill out their own application. Please send in the form 5456 with a copy of your employment contract and residence permit decision that you received from the Migration board. Since your wife does not work, she can only send the copy of her residence permit.

There is no specific application for child allowance (barnbidrag). Once you are registered, the case officer will see under the family relations that you have a child and will send a message to child allowance department to start the case automatically after you have been registered.

    (1) You won’t be able to download the application form for the parental benefit on the webpage and the application form for the parental benefit is only in Swedish. You can either log in on Mina Sidor and make the online application (if you have a Bank ID) or you can call our Customer Support in order to order the paper version of the application form which we can send it to your home address. Please write down on the additional information (number 10: övriga upplysningar) if you or your wife had received any parental benefit from any other country.

    (3) You can give us the bank account details in the parental benefit application. You can also register the bank account details by logging in to Mina Sidor (if you have a Bank ID). If you don’t have a Bank ID, you will need to send us the form 5605.
If you do not have a bank account yet the payments can be sent to your address via a paycheck.

You can read more about parental benefits here and child allowance here.

If you have more questions, you can always contact our Customer Centre for private individuals on the telephone number 0771-524 524. To choose English, you can just say word English to the answering machine.

  • Hi Sir/Madam,
I have one more query. I have recently received personal number and now I want to apply for Swedish Identity card. I am a nonEU citizen and working in Sweden in WP+VISA. What is the procedure and what document are needed for that?

  • Hi, I want to know only one thing, for the parental benefit the bank account should be in the name of father or mother?
    Kals
  • Hello,

When a mother applies for her parental benefit, she should register a bank account in her name. In case the mother does not have any bank account to which we can pay her parental benefits, we can pay them to another person´s account. In that case, the mother needs to fill in a document 5606 „Fullmakt utbetalning till annan person” (Permission of the payment to another person) which you can find on our website here. The same applies to the father.

  • hello,

I have become pregnant and my expected date of delivery is 26th May 2018.
I have started working with a company on the 14th Aug 2017 and its my first company.

    1. Will I be eligible for a child allowance and parental benefits, (thats is 80% of salary benefits and 480 days of leave)
    2. Where and who gives the pregnancy certificate ? so that i can send it to you and see information on filling out the benefits?

    Thank you!!

  • Hello,

You are eligible for child allowance if you are socially insured in Sweden. In that case, child allowance will be paid automatically when the baby is born.

Moreover, to receive parental benefit at sickness benefit level, you must have had an annual income of at least SEK 82,100 for at least 240 consecutive days before the estimated delivery date. You do not need to have worked at the same workplace or had the same income the entire time, but rather it is the number of days with income that is important.
If you do not fulfil this condition, you receive SEK 250 per day at sickness benefit level for the first 180 days that are taken out for the child.

You can get the pregnancy certificate from the midwives who work at your maternal health care center which you visit for regular checkups. Send in the certificate to Försäkringskassans inläsningscentral 839 88 Östersund. It serves as your notification of pregnancy and you can apply for parental benefit in the next step.

If you have more questions, you can always contact our Customer Centre for private individuals on the telephone number 0771-524 524. To choose English, you can just say word English to the answering machine.

  • Hi,
I wanted to ask how does the child allowance work if you're not receiving a salary for your work? I have been working in Sweden as a post doctoral researcher for over a year. I am getting a monthly scholarship which is not taxed. If I was to get child allowance would you employ the student benefit or unemployed persons benefit or something else? Thank you for any answers/help.
    Helen
  • Hello,

If you are a resident of Sweden (if you and your child live here) and you are registered at Försäkringskassan, you might be entitled to receive child allowance. In that case you do not need to receive any salary to be entitled to get child allowance.
Please call our Customer Service on 0771 524 524 in order to check your social insurance status.

If you have questions about study help, please contact Centala Studiestödsnämnden (CSN) here.

If you have questions about benefits for unemployed, please do contact Job Center (Arbetsförmedlingen) here.

  • Hello,

I, together with my wife and two kids, have recently relocated to Sweden from Finland. We have sent an application to Försäkringskassan on Nov. 15, in order to be able to receive EU health insurance card and Child Allowance. However, I can see in "My Pages" that our application is still waiting to be processed. Could you precisely tell:
    1. how much time it usually takes to be registered at Försäkringskassan?
    2. When registered, is the child allowance paid retroactively, i.e., from the date of application?
    3. Do we need to provide some proof that we are receiving any allowance/benefit from Finnish Social Insurance office?

    Thank you.
    Adnan

  • Hello,

    1. The registration process at Försäkringskassan can take several months. However, if it turns out that you need to receive a benefit from Försäkringskassan, we will prioritize processing of your application.
    2. The child allowance is paid after you and the child have been registered in the Population Register, and Försäkringskassan has investigated whether you are entitled to child allowance. Putting it clearly, you will normally get the child allowance payment from the time when you had the right to be socially insured in Sweden. However, you cannot get child allowance retroactively more than 2 years back.
    3. If you have lived or worked in another EU/EEA country or Switzerland, you should provide a certificate showing that you are no longer covered by that country´s social insurance. You also need to provide proof that you are not receiving any allowance/benefit from the country you moved from, in this case Finland.
Please remember that the Swedish Social Insurance Agency has limited abilities to answer questions relating to individual cases on this forum. We therefore ask you to contact our customer center by calling telephone number 0771 524524 and press 8 to get connected to the English line

Our telephone lines are open the following hours:

    Monday – Friday 8.00am — 4.00 pm,

  • Hi,
In September me and my children got personnumer and also I registered in forsakringskassan.Im working full time and my husband currently waiting for he’s residency and do not have work.I read that child allowance is payed automatically but till now we do not received anything. If some documents are missing would I receive letter informing that?
    Ela
  • Hi;

Child allowance is usually paid out automatically when both parents are registered with Försäkringskassan. If we have not started paying out in your case it is probably because your husband is waiting for his residence permit and cannot be registered with us yet.

If there are documents missing from your application we will normally get in touch with you, but I would recommend calling us on 0771-524 524 (choice '8' for English) if you want to know exactly what is happening in your case.

    Best regards;
    Daniel
