Can i send my kid to förskola, if i want to study during my normal vacation(semester) days?

Hi,

I have been working as a full time employee and i have 30 vacation days in my account.
I'ld like to study 10 weeks of full time course in the university. To have a minimal impact on my economy, i'ld like to use my vacation days(30) + parental leave while pursuing the course. I have the following questions. Could you please clarify them?

1) Can i study while i'm on vacation?
2) Can i study while i'm on parental leave?
3) Can i send my kid (3 years old) to förskola while i'm on vacation & studying?
4) Can i send my kid (3 years old) to förskola while i'm on parental leave & studying?
5) If i'm allowed to send my kid to school, how long at the maximum?
6) If i'm NOT allowed to study while i'm on vacation/parental leave, what is the best to handle my situation?

Thanks & Regards

  • Hello,

The fact how you spend your vacation days is not in Försäkringskassans interest.

In some cases you can study while being on parental leave.

For example you are allowed to go for a distance course during your parental leave regardless of the level of parental benefits you are getting.

When you would like to join a classroom course there are different rules which apply.

When you are receiving parental benefits on basic (250 kr/day) or minimum (180kr/day) level, you are eligible for full parental benefit if you are joining the classroom course for no longer than 7 hours a day and/or your child is in the kindergarden for no longer than 7 hours a day.

When you are receiving parental benefits based on the 80% of your salary, then you are not allowed to join any classroom course. This means that when you take the full parental benefit based on your salary, you need to be together with your child the whole day.

  • Hi Aleksandra,

Thanks a lot for your quick answer 😀

I don't know if i understood your answer correctly or not.

According to my understanding, I have answered the questions myself...
I kindly request you to go through all the answers and let me know which one is CORRECT and which one NOT CORRECT. Thanks in advance!

Ans: YES, if i'm using my vacation days (i.e 30 days in this case)

Ans: NO, if i'm using S days (i mean parenatal benifit based on 80% of my salary)
YES, if i'm using L days (i mean parenatal benifit based on basic (250 kr/day) or
                     minimum (180kr/day) level)

    3) Can i send my kid (3 years old) to förskola while i'm on vacation & studying?

YES, if i'm using L days (i mean parenatal benifit based on basic (250 kr/day) or
minimum (180kr/day) level). But, max 7hours/day.

    5) If i'm allowed to send my kid to school, how long at the maximum?
    Ans: See the above answers

    6) If i'm NOT allowed to study while i'm on vacation/parental leave, what is the best to handle my situation?
Ans: Well, i can join classroom study when i'm using my vacation days. That also means that i can leave my kid at förskola full time(8hours/day). If i'm on parental leave there is some restrictions. Please see the above answers.

  • Hello,

To sum up, Försäkringskassan will not investigate how you spend your vacation days, so it is all up to you.

Just to clarify the parental benefit levels:
Parental benefit has three different compensation levels. One level is based on the size of your income, while the other two levels pay you a fixed amount per day.

The sickness benefit level [sjukpenningnivå] is based on your sickness benefit qualifying income. It applies to you when you have a job and income. On the parental benefit application you mark the day with S or sjukpenningnivå.

The second compensation level, referred to as the basic level [grundnivå]is SEK 250 per day. You are eligible for the basic level if you have had little or no income. On the parental benefit application you mark the day with S or sjukpenningnivå.

The third compensation level, referred to as the minimum level [lägstanivå], lasts for 90 days. The minimum level is SEK 180 per day. On the parental benefit application you mark the day with L or lägstanivå.

So there are restrictions while joining the classroom course and taking parental benefit. To sum up when you are taking parental benefit on basic (250 kr/day) or minimum (180kr/day) level, you are eligible for full parental benefit if you are joining the classroom course for no longer than 7 hours a day and/or your child is in the kindergarden for no longer than 7 hours a day. Meaning that if your child starts the day care at 8.00, at 15.00 you need to latest pick up the child.

    Also good to know that:
Special rules apply to the first 180 days that parental benefit is paid. In order for parental benefit to be based on your sickness benefit qualifying income during these days, you must be entitled to more than SEK 180 per day for 240 consecutive days before your baby is due or is actually born.

Försäkringskassan will decide whether you meet the conditions by considering which of those two dates is more advantageous for you. If you do not meet the conditions, you will receive SEK 250 per day in parental benefit at the basic level.

Since we do not know if you have already taken 180 days for this child and if you are now eligible directly to receive parental benefits based on your salary, please call our Customer Support on: 0771 524 524 (press 8 to get help in English) so that we can check your exact situation and give you the correct answer.

    Have a good weekend.

    Best regards,
    Aleksandra
  • Hello!
Can I apply for semester days from my work (generally on workingdays) and pappaledig from försäkringskassan (on weekends) at the same month?
For example; can I get 21 days semester+10 days pappaledig on March month?

  • Hello,
    Thank you for your question.

Here on the “Frequently asked questions”, the number 3, you can find the answer to your question.

As you see, the level of the parental benefit plays role. Kindly observe that, even though semester days are the days that you would not work, they are seen as “paid working days” and the rule still applies for the parental benefit at sickness benefit level.

    Best regards,

    Özge Administrative officer
