Can i get föräldrapenning + CSN during study period?

Case:
I'm planning to start full-time study program at KTH for the coming Autumn semester. Currently, I am working fulltime and would like to take a study break + parently leave. Could you help me with the answers to my below questions

Questions:
- Can I get föräldrapenning (for those days when I will be with my son at home) together with study bidrag + loan?

- During the study period, If I'll work on the weekends or during the summer time,  does that affect my current SGI (prior to studying)?

- For bostadbidrag, will you count study bidrag + loan as an income?

- During the study time, will I be eligible for sjukpenning eller VAB?

Thank you in advance.

  • Hi;

    1. The general rule is that you can receive parental benefit at the same time as you are enrolled in studies as long as they are distance studies that do not require you to be present at the school. If your full-time course requires you to attend classes, you will not be able to apply for parental benefit for the time of your classes.

    2. If you start sudying with student aid from CSN, your previous SGI will be paused for the duration of your studies. If you then start working at the same time as your studies, you can have the right to a special SGI during your studies. This is based on the salary you have when you work for example on weekends and will be used if you apply for benefits for time when you would have worked otherwise.

    3. The student aid (studiebidrag) counts as an income for bostadsbidrag, whereas the student loan does not.

    4. You normally do not have the right to VAB when you are studying, since you do not have to miss your job. The only exception is if you receive benefits from your employer during the time you are studying and you lose those benefits if you miss part of your studies. However, you may also want to check with CSN as there are some conditions in which you may keep your student support when your child is sick.

    Regarding sick benefit when you study, you can find more information here.

  • Thank you for the detailed answer. However, I still have a question regarding point # 2.
    Let suppose I start working on weekends during my study period, can I have the right to pause the SGI, so it will not be affected with the income I’ll have during the study period?

  • Hi;

    As soon as you start studying with support from CSN, your qualifying income (SGI) is paused until you stop studying. When you stop studying, you return to the SGI that you had before the start of your studies as long as you continue to protect it (for example by working the same job, or taking out parental benefit for five days a week, or looking for work full-time).

    Best regards;
    Daniel
