Can both parents take parental leave for the same period to take care of different children?

Hi,

My wife and I are parents of two children and both of us are employed. One child goes to dagis and the other to school. There will be a period between Christmas and New Years when both school and dagis will be closed.
I know that both parents can't take parental leave for the same period for a child, but since we have two children are we allowed to apply to parental leave for this period at the same time, one for each child, so we both can take care of them?

Best regards,

Denis

  • Hello,

Yes, it is possible to take parental benefit for two parents for the same period for two different children.

It is also possible to be on parental leave for two parents for the same period and same child and it is called double days. The double days can only be taken out during the child's first year and both parents can take out 30 double days at most.

You can apply parental benefit online via My Pages (Mina sidor) on our website. You can also see what is happening with your case on My Pages.
You can find more information about parental benefit here.

    Best regards

  • Hello!
We have a 1,5 years old daughter who does not have a place to a forskola. One of our relatives stays with her when we are at work. Do I have the right to use parental leave days to stay with her  few weeks or it is necessary the child to have a place to school in order to use them?

  • Hi!
If someone has worked 6 months, then ends his contract and applies for parental leave while been unemployed, how is the monthly amount calculated?Based on his previous salary or the the sickness minimum level( 250 kr per day)? And what does the term protect your income mean?

  • Hello Tony,

Yes, you have the right to use parental benefit as long as you take care of the child. The child doesn't need to start school for you to take the parental benefit.
This is of course if you are socially covered in Sweden. You can find more information about parental benefit here.

  • Hello Tony and Antonis,

The answer to your questions about the basic level 250 kr per day is here.

Examples of how to protect your qualifying income:
    • If you reduce your working hours by half from full-time to part-time, you must take at least two and a half days of parental benefit per week.
    • If you lose your employment you should register to Arbetsförmedlingen
    • When you study with the CSN study benefit
More information about parental benefit you'll find on www.forsakringskassan.se.

If you have questions regarding your specific cases you're wellcome to call to us 0771 524 524 and press 8 for english.
